Fighting with Chromium in Lubuntu. Apparently my flash was outdated and I wasn’t able to watch anything from Youtube today. This should have been really easy to handle, but for some reason it took me quite a long time to get this done and it wasn’t really done the way that I originally wanted to do it.
I started by getting the rpm file and trying to install that. Well it didn’t really work that well and I didn’t get that working.
Next I tried downloading the tar.gz file and unpacking it. It worked fine and I got the .so file which should have gotten the player working when placed to the right directory. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find the right directory. I found /etc/chromium-browser, but the folder didn’t have a certain place for plugins. This was weird because I had an earlier version of flash there, or at least I should have had and couldn’t find it. Now thinking this might have been something thanks to the updates that I did earlier.
After this I decided to use synaptics package manager. This already had the packet installed, but I thought that it might be a really good idea to mark it for reinstallation. This finally solved the problem.
The biggest problem here was that I didn’t know about the origins of where these would be located and for that reason I spent a good amount of time digging around for other ways to solve the same problem.
Over all I would recommend people to see over the following link for my opinions on the laptop that I have.
Updating the flash
Three applications written and send
I managed to write and send three applications for different interesting internship positions. Two of those would be in Norwich and one in London. I feel that any of these three positions would be really exciting so I have chosen that I will take the first one of these that I would be offered.
I should broaden my job search now, so the next positions might be in London. The city provides some really good positions for people who are willing to work. Norwich is a beautiful city, but lately it unfortunately hasn’t been offering me such good positions for work and I might have to consider moving inside England.
Installing wireless drivers on Zoostorm laptop with Lubuntu
I got my new zoostorm laptop with 15.4″ display, 500GB HD and realtek 8723e wireless card, which I got finally working by following these instructions here.
Before you rush to install these if you have the same problem, few words of warning. Ubuntu or in my case Lubuntu does not come with these drivers preinstalled. When I tried to first install them I ran in to a problem. My kernel was a too new one. I first thought that this was just something wrong with the distro, but after installing and trying to do this on Ubuntu I had the same problem. Next I had to go back and find an LTS version of Lubuntu 12.04. This to have kernel 3.2.1-41-generic to be able to use the drivers found from the link above.
The driver is working at the moment, but it isn’t really working as well as I hoped. Meaning that my five year old macbook is still getting a bit better signal than my new laptop. In defence of my new laptop I have to say that Lubuntu is a really snappy feeling distro and I’m really happy for using it.
The next step should be magnifying the signal strength of my wireless router. This could be done with just repositioning it a little, but I have to see if others living in the house would be fine with that.
Adding a new theme once again
I decided to update my old theme. Unfortunately this didn’t turn out to be such a good idea. After the update Google Chrome at least didn’t anymore support the theme and I decided to change it to another theme. This however wasn’t an easy task. While there is a wide selection of free themes for WordPress, I think that there are quite few that meet my requirements for a good theme.
Many times this requires something like rounded corners on edges. I know that it is a really minor feature, but in my mind it does make some kind of an difference.
It should actually work with the required effects. I was disappointed that one theme was trying to put the extracted contents under one mainpage in white on top of the white background. This would have been easily fixed by just finding ‘hover’ words from the CSS-file, but unfortunately I wasn’t really able to read the lines there fully. Although I do think that it is unacceptable for a theme to have problems such as this one. But we have to remember that we are using a free service here, so we shouldn’t really complain that much.
Despite all of these problems I do feel that I managed to find an acceptable theme. Though this maybe doesn’t look as nice as the site that I just build. This site does work quite nicely with the theme and I was happy that I managed to change small details like the colours of h2 tags and the color of hovering over the main menu after the logo. Al though really simple, these were something that I was kind of proud about.
With these words I do think that it would be a really good idea to go to bed.
Building a new website
Building a new website to work with WordPress isn’t a difficult job. I did mess this up few times by myself, but I think that this can’t really be blamed on WordPress. The site that I worked on can be seen
I’m really happy though that I have something that I have built myself in the internet now and this can be seen by others as a proof that I can do this development in other sites than just with my own. Next interesting thing would be changing the CSS file to give h2 tags different color. I think that it is as easy as it sounds, but it didn’t work on my first try this morning.
I think that it is kind of worrying how few words I actually use to describe such a large subject. I would expect that something like this would easily go to something like 500 words or much more, but these little blog posts are still just barely 200 words. On the other hand many people don’t even do that, so I guess that in some sense I am a winner here. While something like 250 words does sound like a ridiculously small amount of words to be used in something like a blog post, we have to remember that it could be much less. 250 words do already require some movement of fingers and I believe that there is some cognitive processing also associated with the process.
