Techblog

I did again a blog post on TextEdit and then I started reading it back to myself and it sounded really bad, so I decided that I’m not going to publish it here, where everyone could laugh at it. This itself tells you a little about how much faith I have on my own text.
I have been working on some Java code today. Only difficult thing is at the moment that when I want to make a popup window and I search for some tips with Google, the only thing seems to be how to do it with javascript. I know that these aren’t really even close to each other, but really hard for me to say really anything to this right now.
I was just thinking that how much people in the university for something like literature have to write for their normal assignments. I got some information that a normal essay would be around 5000 words. Even with this 500 words a day pace it would take 10 days to write one essay. The writing isn’t most likely even close to the difficult part. You have to read it again and again to yourself and revising it each time and so on.
I should maybe think about renting a movie tonight. I was thinking of Tom Cruises Knight and Day. I think that it would be something where you really shouldn’t use your brains, but just to watch the movie and be entertained. I’m not sure if many people would use the word entertained with this movie, but I could look at some reviews now.
Only 6.4 from IMDB. That isn’t a too great score. Well, I did have a look at some other possibilities like SALT and it had done about as badly as this movie had. But I wished for a movie where I shouldn’t really think at all and these two look perfect for that purpose. I think that I should see if Knight and Day is for rent at our local library and that should make the decision.
I have now written about 1000 words for today. Including this short post and the 666 words I wrote on TextEdit. I think that it isn’t still too much, but it’s a start for today. I could still use some time for programming and that would include some writing (surprise). Just to go back to the previous topic about these essays. 1000 words a day is a really bad outcome, when you think that this text hasn’t really been read through or edited at all. But I think that this will be enough text for this morning.

Today I finished reading Belgarath the sorcerer, which I told you already that I was reading. I really loved that book. Once again it gave me a chance to go to the far away place where sorcery existed and people were just stereotypes of their kins men. These books thought me a lot while I was growing up. Even if their purpose isn’t to make you think about these things, it really gave you a good ground where to think that “is that so”.
I already got a new book that I started reading. This is a few years old book, but it at least sounds really interesting after something like ten pages. This book is by Howard Bloom and its name is “The Lucifer Principle”. This book seems to be telling about how people should be aware that nature causes Evil as an uneatable part of our progress. I know that this doesn’t sound too accurate description yet, but I recommend you to read this book by yourself to get a better picture of it.
This is about what I have read now.I will post updates here, if I make some changes to these plans.

I mentioned already about a great call that I received yesterday. They said that they would e-mail me that day, but I haven’t received anything. I was hoping that they would have a opening for some programer, I would have been really happy with a junior position, but that might have been just a call made by mistake. I can’t come up with any other reason to why that call was made and that I didn’t receive an e-mail after that. They just asked me that am I familiar with things like object oriented programming and Java. I would say that I am, but what they were looking for I don’t have a clue. I’d really love to get more knowledge here, but I think that it isn’t just that easy at the moment. This did give me a little push to get back at studying programming, but I don’t know if it is just a temporary push. I think though that studying Java is interesting and that I should do it more often on my own. Yesterday I started to read about using super() in programs. I understood that this means that you call parent class contractor and that is where you can use it, but I think that I’ll make a little example myself today, to explain this to myself. In programming it always helps a lot if you know yourself what you are writing. I think that I have slipped out of that habit at the moment and I really should get back to this.
Programming these bits would be done with Java. While programming with PHP is a good thing to learn about at the moment, Java is still something that I could say as my main interest. I did my dissertation on it and I have used it for quite many other projects too. I’m beginning to notice slight problems with my own writing at the moment. I think that it means that I should stop writing this right now and concentrate my efforts in to something more relevant at the moment.
Please don’t hate me for not having the word of the day here today. I guess that this is a little over 500 words and that is good for today.

Wednesday’s post

This is a odd way to write a blog post. I’m not connected to the internet at all right now, and I’m just writing this post on TextEdit. I’m going to just copy and paste this text as my blog for today. This saves me from taking a internet connection, that would definitely distract me while writing something like this. I’m going to make connection to the internet today, but I know that once I start it’s just so hard to stop. So I think that everyone understands why I’m doing it this way.
Just another notice. Macs TextEdit doesn’t have something that would count the number of words. This seems really kinda odd, because the program itself is quite wide and that is something that you’d expect to find from such programs. It isn’t really that big deal, but you just think that you would know how some programs work, but I think that in this I hoped to know what I’m using. Luckily there was another way to quite easily find this information. I have a file called blog.txt on my Desktop and all I need to do there is to type ‘cat blog.txt | wc’ to the command line. This pastes the contents of the file to the command line window and lets you see the amount of characters and words in the text. You can find more details about this by typing ‘man wc’.
At the moment this seems to have a little over 200 words. I just still can’t believe that TextEdit wouldn’t have something build in it that would give you the contents that you want to have. I have been really surprised for how well it can handle for example some small things like viewing HTML files, both in final form and in plain text. (on a side note I seem to be making a huge amount of typos right at the moment)
I have gotten the book that I’m currently reading almost finished now. It just seems a little funny because the book has so many pages that now it’s almost over. I found it really enjoyable to once more go through David Eddings text and to recognise the familiar characters and so on in slightly different book. I have already mentioned that I have read a great deal of this authors books and they were really important part of me being a teenager.
I have gotten some of our home cleaned now and I’m thinking that I might get the rest cleaned today. I really don’t even know if I want to do that, but it’s just nice to think that it’s a possibility. Another thing that I have been thinking about are these blog posts. 500 words is quite a small amount when you really start to think about it. It’s just a flash and then it’s done. The another thing though is that I more or less always end up writing a lot of useless stuff as some fillers to get past the 500 words. So I’m just thinking that is it a good idea to keep the amount of words this low or is it something that I should increase. I don’t really have a valid opinion to this myself. Or if you can even use the word valid here. But if you would like to make a good blog it might just be 200 words a day, but the contents would be of good quality. Then on other hand would that 200 words help me to become faster writer? I know that my skills could be a lot better, but I don’t know where you should draw the line. I think that my writing speed is quite valid except that I have weird caps between the words. (please don’t think duuh they are spaces) What I mean is that I really slow down my writing once one word is finished. It could of course be that I just try to think of the next word, but it seems to happen with programming too and many other things as well. I think that I’m really a lot faster than just few years ago, but I do still think that I could be a lot faster. The thing might be that most people can only write a little slower than they think. So it might have something to do with the speed of my fingers(which most likely is the problem) or it just might have something to do with my thinking.

I wrote this in morning and I can’t bother to add the word of the day today. Sorry.

First of February

I was about to use “Tuesday blog” as the topic for this post, but there is something that is more interesting happening today. Which everyone has most likely already noticed. It turned to the February of this month and we’re that much closer to what ever people are waiting for.
I found this morning thanks to Spotify one of the bands that I really liked in high school. Nightwish is the band in question. I especially like the ones where Tarja Turunen sings. I just lost my interest to the band after they changed their singer. I know that the music is about the same quality and so on, but it isn’t so different from the mainstream bands anymore. It’s a important thing to be something that people know to be different from anything else. That is how most of the bands go on with their records. I like some artists like Emilie Autumn, even though the music alone might not be enough for everyone to like her. I do also really like this finnish artist Maija Vilkkumaa. Her music is also something that is a little different from the usual mainstream, but I like her style. Even though some people do think that her voice sounds like a dying cat. Which isn’t the nicest possible thing to say. I do like her voice and I’m sure that I would myself sound much worse.
Speaking a little more of Nightwish. I don’t see that much problems with Tarja’s pronouncing. I know that many people say that it’s terrible, but just try to sing like that and that alone is difficult enough. I think that singers like her should get a “don’t complain about the way I pronounce things”-card. Just because here voice is so great that I think that it’s kinda unfair to complain about such things.
This makes the number of words about 300 today. It’s just weird how hard something is to do when you just have to do it. I know that only one who is requesting me to do this is me myself, but that shouldn’t make it too easy. I think that another 200 words isn’t much asked. Specially when you don’t have anyone who would be too good at writing these things that would read this over and comment me on my writing or the phrases that I use. I do know that the language that I use does have a load of flaws in it, but that should’t really stop me.
I have a good set of pages loaded on a bookmark folder at the moment that should help me with learning some PHP. I know that I have been planning on learning some of that language for a while now, but you should always have something that you’re about to do. Life would get really boring if you didn’t have anything to do. I should maybe read a chapter of two of Belgarath the sorcerer (the book that I’m currently reading) and I could then just call this a day. I have now gone over the mark of 500 words, which makes this a really easy thing to write, for the rest of the way.
Word of the day:
Ex-plic-it : Stated clearly and in detail, leaving no room for confusion or doubt

I found again some “news” saying that IPv4 is going to run out of the IP addresses this year. I don’t really think that this is a surprise. How could it be, because we have had news about this for years now. If you don’t know what the difference is, IPv4 has addresses like XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX. Most of the modern world is based on these addresses, but we must see that they are going to run out at some point. Sure, there might be possibilities to extend the time that IPv4 has left (some big companies like IBM have a ridiculous amount of these addresses on their account). It isn’t really something that you would like to see, because we really should just move to IPv6. The amount requirement for IP addresses is going no where but up. IPv6 would bring us a nice amount of new addresses and moving is just something that we can’t avoid and so it shouldn’t be push the move back anymore. (the month that the IPv4 addresses are going to run out this years September)
The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) controls the blocks of IP addresses. A block is a segment of numbers, not something that we give to each individual person buying a domain. It’s a set of addresses, that large companies can buy for themselves to sell in the future. IANA is going to have some kind of ceremony when it sells the last blocks, just to make people understand how significant this is.
Our internet just does not want to work at the moment. I don’t know the exact reason for this and I really can’t even make a educated guess to why this is happening. I tried to ping from command line and I tried to load some pages with the browser, but neither one of these attempts really helped.
I’m watching a long speech between two individuals from Youtube. They are just saying how important it is to have passion to what you’re doing. The best example they gave was Albert Einstein. He didn’t do that well at school, but he learned these things about physics and math by himself, because he was really passionate about them. You would be willing to do these extremely long days on something that you feel passionate about and something that you would do on your own and without any real rewards from the outside world. I think that I have seen these with some people. Like I know one person who hasn’t really ever learned programming at school, but does feel really passionate about programming and is really good at it. And yes, he thought all the skills for that himself.
It just makes you wonder that are you going to find anything like this ever. Another thing that I’m wondering at the moment is what is happening with this internet. It does work in some ways, but the connection isn’t that stable. But the Youtube videos have loaded again something like 10 minutes and that is good for me.
I have already reached 500 words on todays blog. I think that I have some words back here that I could use as the word of the day today.
im-pli-ca-tion : the conclusion that can be drawn from something, although is isn’t explicitly stated, or isn’t clearly stated
This is a great word that I have heard a few times in Big Bang Theory. It’s just funny to find some of these words that are just so basic, but for some reason you still don’t understand that contents before you read the definition. This is just a great piece of information.
