Everyone knows that there are a load of file types. We have the common .doc, little newer .docx and the faithful .pdf. These all would work great in perfect world, but in this one I’m not too sure.
Today .doc seems to be the most common format by far. Others are good, but there isn’t two options for the most used format. This has also caused some problems to people using relatively unknown software. For example, I used openoffice to create .doc files for my dissertation. I’m not sure was it cause of Linux or just because of openoffice, but after transferring these files to Windows many things seemed to go wrong. So I decided to switch to using MS Office on my MAC, but the result was the same. I managed to get past this problem by printing the .doc files as .pdf before sending and this worked. This was great for the work I was doing and I started using program called LaTeX after that. It’s one of those great programs that allow you to write something on you own computer and it would look the same on every computer.

Now you might think that this solved all my problems. Unfortunately that was and is not the case. I think many employers will overlook CV send in .pdf format. Many might think that this is just cause I’m applying for lower positions, but should that really matter? It is very unfortunate that some thing like this should work as disadvantage for some.
